The Camp at Mount Tabor

About the Camp

The Camp at Mount Tabor is Phase I of a plan to build a multipurpose camping and retreat facility near Butler, PA. Additional phases of this project include expanding the basic camp, adding a retreat facility, building a fully functional chapel, possibly building a retirement village, and possibly expanding office facilities for related organizations and ministries.

Why Build Our Own Camp?

The youth ministries of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Pittsburgh have been operational for over 30 years. Three decades of dynamic Metropolis youth ministry have generated thousands of young men and women dedicated to their Orthodox Christian faith. Some families presently include three generations who have experienced Summer Camp as campers and/or counselors.

As our programs have grown, we have approached the limits of the rented facilities we presently use. We will very shortly exceed the capability of these facilities to house our program. We cannot continue to offer the type of programs necessary to meet the needs of our Metropolis, nor can we expand the programs we offer without our own facilities.

The Butler property

After many years of searching for suitable locations to consider for our own camp, a piece of prime farm property was examined near Butler, PA. Upon further investigation and assessment, a committee was formed to evaluate the site and draw up a master plan for consideration.

In June of 2000, the Diocesan Council of the Greek Orthodox Diocese of Pittsburgh (later named Metropolis of Pittsburgh) took a monumental step in voting unanimously to purchase the property as a future site for our own diocese camp and retreat center. This step was taken under the guidance of Metropolitan Maximos and with the full support of the Diocese Youth Commission.

One of the considerations for this piece of property is its proximity to Moraine State Park and Lake Arthur - recreational facilities within just a few miles of the site. Another consideration is accessibility. For an idea of the location of the property, map to Stamm Lane, Butler PA, 16001. (Stamm Lane is adjacent to a portion of our property.)
